Community Management - Dealing with an Edgelord

Definition

An edgelord is an internet slang term for someone who deliberately posts exaggerated, dark, or offensive content (such as nihilism, extremism, or taboo subjects) to shock others and appear cool, edgy, or controversial. Primarily found on forums like 4chan, they seek attention and often push back against “political correctness”.

Edgelords generally have a handful of posting gimmicks they will use; comments about race or gender are pretty common.

For this document, I will use the term “gimmick”.

Tactic

The edgelord tactic is joining a community and proceeding to post “Edgy” material, stuff that is just borderline unacceptable. If they get away with it they will use this as a license to further push the envelope of what is acceptable, and encourage others to adopt their edgy posting gimmick.

Intention

The edgelord’s intention is to normalize or make acceptable whatever terrible thing they are using as their gimmick, sometimes as a form of trolling by making others believe something terrible, or sometimes just because they are that
terrible thing.

They know it is bullshit, that is why they are doing it.

The motivation is to create an environment where their terrible posting gimmick is acceptable.

The end state of an edgelord infestation is that the reasonable members of the community will leave. Silently, in most cases, as the community is no longer something they want to invest time or energy into.

Conclusion

I have seen this shit a few times, and the way I would play it is:

Hard stop or get the fuck out.

Confront the edgelord and tell them their behaviour is unacceptable.

• “I was just joking bro”, “it was ironic bro” are standard pushbacks. Disregard, the argument is to make unacceptable behaviour acceptable
• Do not be dragged down into arguments about anything. State that their gimmick is unacceptable here, and they can post about it somewhere else
• Do not fall for any bullshit “freedom of speech” arguments either. As a community leader, you are on private property, and the edgelord is trespassing

You have a duty to the existing members of the community; do not allow the nonsense of an edgelord to destroy what your community has created.
