Some stuff to know about topographic maps.

Co-ordinates

The "Origin" of the topographic map is the lower left corner. This could start at 0 0.

Topographic coordinates are presented as 2 pairs of numbers.

• Eastings - across the bottom, east to west
• Norhtings - up the side, south to north

"Along the corridor, then up the stairs".

Leading zeros matter, do not discard them like you might expect from high school math.

0100 0100 is NOT the same as 100 100.

Digits of Precision

The more digits, the more precision, aka the smaller the area.

• 2 - 10000 meter
• 4 - 1000 meter
• 6 - 100 meter (6 digit reference is the standard)
• 8 - 10 meter
• 10 - 1 meter

Cardinal Directions to degrees

Starting with North at 0°:

• North 0°
• East 90°
• South 180°
• West 270°
