Dirt. Reading and using the ground

WORK IN PROGRESS

Leadership Series

Decision making on the ground

The saying goes "Half of tactics is dirt". Read the ground and use it to provide cover and concealment for your movement.

  • Flank. If an element is already directly assaulting, execute a flank and harvest souls (see The Four Fs)
  • If you have the advantage in numbers, you can assault directly using fire and maneuver
  • If you do not have the advantage in numbers, you can hit and fade. Score a few hits and then pull back before an effective response can be mustered. Shift position and after things have cooled off a little, hit them again
  • Don't chase. Have them chase you into ground you have selected

Map work

On topographical maps there is a convention that hilltops or peaks will be marked with their elevation, but shallows or bowls will not.

Danger Zones

Skylining

  • Avoid Skylining, the high contract silhouttes of person against sky can be seen for quite some distance
  • Do not travel along the top of the ridge, use the "Military Crest" and walk along the ridge a few meters down from the top

Linear Danger Area (LDA)

  • Be aware of the Linear Danger Area (LDA) and co-ordinate with friendlies to cross safely. These can be roads or clearings

Convex Slope

  • Beware convex slopes as they can conceal enemy movement up close across a wide distance
